Before I go too far on this, it is important to note that this was not supposed to be the beginning of the story. This was supposed to just be an album. It came out soon after We’re Making Music Now (only three months after). In some ways I wish I had delayed this and combined it with Invasion Earth (like I did on the CDs). This ended up being short, and not even considered an album on most of the streaming services (so it gets placed differently).
We did not know what type of music we wanted to make, so we were still experimenting. So, this album had another Live Vol 1 on it (more on that later). Since we did not know what to make music about (and we did not just want to experiment like we did on the first album and end up with tracks, we had only two choices. One was to try and mimic the songs the spacecraft heard from earth (remember they are picking up our radio and tv signals). This did not seem authentic to them, and they did not want to just copy others. So, the only other option was to make music about what they knew.
Up to that point that had been really not a lot (they could do stories they were watching from Earth but thought that might also be construed as copying). They wanted to do their own experiences, however, up until very recently their own experiences have been just floating around Earth and watching us. We were working on one song (“What goes around comes around”) but thought it might be too cheesy (guess we did not listen to We’re Making Music Now).
Super offered the idea for the first song. He thought the process of sending out signals looking for other moving spacecraft was quite melodic. Everyone agreed, and we were off on our first song:
Deep Space Radar Beeps – Ok so this is not deep space at all (in fact still in orbit), but the title seemed more impressive. It is funny that the song is only four and a half minutes long, but the overall process took months. However, I could not record for months on Topper, so we had to be more reasonable. The song basically is the experiences SuperStar was feeling while doing the searching. Note, he was not technically just listening to the beeps (all objects would beep back like sonar but was looking for beeps that changed meaning there was motion). The video for this song shows the story well. First found was Flash, then after more looking, DarkStar was found (and there was continued searching to no avail after that). This brought us to:
Space and Terrestrial – Was supposed to be Noise, but somehow a word got cut off. After getting together, being a bit bored, they were looking for fun. Specifically, some music to kick off the party. This did not work out well, as they only found static. On a side note, the static was created by using the FM radio feature. We thought it was apropos that we used the same radio station that they interfered with to contact me initially. Topper was used to tune to the station, then off tune to get the noise. Since they could not find music, guess they had to make it. This brought out:
Pop Stylings Live, Vol 1 – As discussed last time what these songs were is basically the group laying down a backing track, and then soloing over it live (recording it as playing). Flash picked the first one (he wanted some Funk), but this time DarkStar jumped in. He thought pop was the most straight forward (and pop is popular by definition).
That closes this album. It wasn’t until we were making the next one that we decided it would be our story, and we would build on this. As far as the songs go. Deep Space Radar Beeps appears to be the most popular, earning the most listens.
Hope you found this fun. Until next time.
