Acceleration and Holding (and holding)
This song is imitating life (remember last discussion with the accelerating song). I have created two tracks. One with the arpeggio, and one with the drum beat. They also have the acceleration pattern the spacecraft wanted. Accelerate up to a point then hold there for a period before accelerating again. Same pattern on the deceleration. So that is two tracks of music (and those who know the OP-1 know there are only 4 available tracks). Now the 3 of them only have two tracks to record on.
This is not horrible, they could share. I suggested that two of them share one track and one dub over the other. I could handle that here (I would need to be careful to get the levels, but it is doable). That was not a very popular option (I think they spent so many years inside their own little boxes sharing is a tough concept for them to grasp).
Second option was for me to dub the drum part over the arpeggio part. Then I could delete the remaining, and they would be back to having one tape each. This seemed like an easy approach. Then Superstar pointed out that in mixing the drum and arpeggio volumes would change during the song, and they would not be at the same time. This would mean that I would have to mix them (at least in relation to each other) when combining them. Unfortunately, they can not tell me the volumes until they lay down their tracks (so that is an issue).
Finally, I suggested that I just copy the tracks over to a computer (I do that to back them up anyway) and I could then mix them on my PC where I have more than 4 tracks (like just about every other music producer on the planet). This was met with a cold silence, then a finally, why am I trying to cut Topper out of the process (Topper is the name of the OP-1 – the spacecraft have been able to communicate with him directly). I said that I was not doing that and he was still integral (he does feel like a part of the group), just as a way for this one song to expand our number of tracks. With this, Darkstar is pondering the problem with Topper and will get back to me. He thinks one of my above solutions will work, he just needs to come up with the details.
So, we accelerated, I got my part done, and now we coast while we work out how to fit 3 parts into 2 tracks (music matches reality).
