What I think about the new album

I know I said I was going to post my impressions on this album on Monday. However, I thought putting that out on the same day the album comes out was a bit tacky, so I decided to wait a few days. This is an interesting album. It took me a long time to get completed. There are a lot of new things on this album (as listed in my Mar 24th blog entry).
This album fits in nicely with the story. It is a break from a big event (Songs From the Silicon Heart – saving the Earth). The spacecraft got a lot of new abilities. This album follows that. It is a break in the story, but also an exercise in using some of those new abilities (as listed on Mar 24th).
From a musical perspective, the album follows that. I really like some of the sounds and the blending. I think we utilized our synthesizer better. Some of the other things we tried worked out neat, and I look forward to trying them again in the future (now that we have learned how they work).
Having said all that, this definitely affected the feel of the album. At times the music seems lost in a see of trying things (like the music was playing second fiddle to the affects). It almost feels like the first album (Were Making Music Now). That was a group of demos that we put together as we learned how to make music. We needed to tell the story, we needed to work out how to take the music further. However, that did affect the feel of the album.
On a positive note, as stated above, some of the sounds and mixing was really nice. Taking that and these tools and applying them to a more story based album will take that to the next level (and that is our goal for the next album).
So, I preferred Songs From the Silicon Heart from a pure musical perspective. However, I really liked some of the sounds and other things we did on this album. I look forward to using these things in a more musical setting instead of trying to “Find a Place” for them. Either way the story continues at where ever Flash pulled the Brochure from.
